Obviously both books have to cover some of the same ground, but each does it in his own style, and focuses on different things. In this unparalleled biography, Dustin Galer demonstrates how Beryl Potter seemed to crack the code of the social system that oppressed her. Like, you can’t say women aren’t good at sport when some of them (like Beryl) could beat those amateur men (like she did for the 12 hour time trial, where she was the fastest for both men and women, and held the men’s record for 2 years).

Beryl was clearly one of Britain's finest athlete's at a time when women's cycling was not recognised and the industry full of misogyny.Wilson springs a few surprises beyond that, with Geoffrey Boycott making an appearance in support of all things Yorkshire – and (presumably drawing on Wilson's main job as the chief sports reporter for the Daily Telegraph), jockey AP McCoy adds comment. The cyclist dominated her sport as much as her male contemporary Eddy Merckx, but with added longevity that surpasses sporting legends like Muhammad Ali, Serena Williams and Sir Steve Redgrave.

Both authors have input from family members, friends, and fellow competitors, as you would expect – and the obligatory cycling dignitaries such as Bradley Wiggins and Chris Boardman are referenced. Initially tagging along-on supposedly sociable club runs with her husband, Burton decided she’d never let on if she was suffering.Ruthless, relentless, brilliant, belligerent - and quite possibly the greatest Olympian Britain never had. I felt such a responsibility to tell this story – Beryl made history and delivered this incredible story and I was fortunate to tell it.

Similarly, there is some explanation of life behind the Iron Curtain, and how 'an ingrained doping system inside Russia' is likely to have 'unfairly denied [Burton] further world titles'. This book is a fantastic addition to the collection of anyone with a passion for activism, social justice, and disability studies. His weaving of her early years to the troubles of life in England and then in Canada is engaging and readers will find the story captivating. He presents a powerful new perspective on the deep psychological mechanisms behind birthday parties, royal coronations, fire-walking and terrifying rites of passage.Christmas is just around the corner, but DON’T PANIC: we’re here to provide you with the ultimate festive gifting inspiration, and remind you that books are certainly the easiest presents to wrap…! it is an excellent book [and] well worth a read * Cycling Europe Podcast * Charts the incredible story of cyclist Beryl Burton, who set a world record in 1967 and was Britain's best all-rounder for 25 successive years. Yet despite little outside assistance, Burton won the World Championships Road Race in 1960 and 1967, while on the track she won a huge haul including five gold, three silver and four bronze medals. Certainly, it’s overshadowed her seven world titles held in more conventional events such as the track pursuit and road race. But without this book - which is niche even by the standards of British sporting books - I doubt I’d ever have heard of her and imagine that’s true for many others.Metropolis International Group Limited, 10th Floor, Southern House, Wellesley Grove, Croydon, CR0 1XG.
